Mark van Tongeren

Mark van Tongeren is a vocal performer and musicologist with a PhD in artistic research.

He is best known for his work as an overtone singer and the book/album dedicated to this extraordinary vocal technique.

Mark keeps expanding his wide range of other vocal techniques and plays instruments such as the mouth harp and double-nose flute.


His latest album is Le Rêve, composed by and performing with Arnaud Lechat.


He began field research into Tuvan khöömei (throat singing) in 1993 and continues to study Siberian/Mongol music, Tibetan chant, polyphonic traditions from Sardinia and Corsica, and Taiwanese aboriginal music and dance.


He is/has been part of (or co-founded) IUooUI (2021), Superstringtrio (2010), Parafonia (2007), Oorbeek (2002) and Silo Theatre (1992).


He studied intermedial arts with musician / painter Michael Vetter and obtained a PhD in artistic research from Leiden University, collaborating with overtone singer Rollin Rachele in an 'Overtone Singing Marathon.'


He has performed live with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, vocalist Jaap Blonk, vocalist Makigami Koichi, throat singer/instrumentalist Choduraa Tumat, double-bass player Wilbert de Joode, pianist Lee Shih-Yang, instrumentalist/inventor Phil Dadson, throat singer /instrumentalist Otkun Dostai, trumpet player Felicity Provan, Palestine muezzin Firaz Gazzaz, soprano Chien Chun Lin, the dancers of Taipei Dance Circle and BIAO, flautist Mark-Alban Lotz, guzheng player Tung Chao-Ming and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Tran Quang Hai, and many more.


He collaborated with composers Jack Body (NZ), Yang Song (DE/PRC), Cin Cin Lee (TW) and Paul Oomen (NL) on the writing of new works featuring his voice and instruments. He helped restore Dmitry Shostakovich's Odna (Alone) from 1931, and sang at its first public performance, in 2003.
